Antimicrobial resistance is predicted to cause 10 million deaths by 2050. Could phage therapy be the solution?

This week saw the official launch of the AusHealth Phage Therapy Centre. It’s home to a team of researchers who are taking up arms against one of the greatest challenges modern medicine faces – the rise of antimicrobial resistance.

The Platypep venom project, funded by AusHealth since 2016, has taken another step toward creating an Australian-made version of Ozempic.

The research team has successfully identified a ‘hero peptide’ – derived from platypus venom – that reduces food intake, prevents weight gain and improves metabolic health in mice.

We celebrated seven exceptional PhD students working on cutting-edge research in cell and biological therapies at a formal presentation last week. They each won $10,000.
